Lahore museum


Lahore museum also called central museum, is one of the biggest 10 museums of the world, shows its grandeur in its architectural heritage and modern history of Lahore. The museum contains different galleries having specimens of Sikhs and Mughals door ways, paintings belonging to Mughals, Sikhs and British.

A special public fund was raised to construct the building, on the golden jubilee of Queen Victoria held in 1877. The foundation stone of the consisting museum was laid on 3 February, 1890 with the hands of Prince Albert Victor, Queen Victoria's grandson.  The construction of the building was completed in 1894, the entire museum collection was transferred from the present tollinton market (served as a museum for 30 years in the past)  to the present building with its new name as Jubilee Museum with refence of golden jubilee of malika Victoria.

The museum consists of two stories and have different galleries based on different historical and archaeological periods. The museum also includes a library and an auditorium. The building of the museum is built in red sandstone and shows a cluster of anglo mughal buildings.

In the museum a separate gallery is reserved for the miniature paintings named Central miniature painting gallery, there are many fine specimens of paintings in this gallery. As we enter the gallery and lift our head up, we see one of the finest specimen of mural painting, on the ceiling of the gallery by one of the most gifted and eminent painters of Pakistan, Saddequain Naqash. The mural is a large image, such as a painting or photograph, applied directly the ceiling.

In early 1970s, Sadequain completed several calligraphies for the Lahore Museum, each measuring approximately 20 x 20 feet, and gifted them to the citizens of Lahore. Some of these calligraphic panels, , are on display in the Islamic Gallery of the museum. Saddequain also inscribed and gifted a Sura-e-Yaseen on the wooden panel to the Islamic Gallery of the Lahore Museum. Relics of Buddha, Tibetan and Nepalese work is also on display in the museum. The fasting Buddha is one of the unique collections in the museum. 

Different galleries in the museum display different information according to their names and topics. Its galleries include coins, sculptures, Mughal paintings and fabrics. Collection of the jewellery in the museum is of worth seeing with objects of the Indus civilization. A collection of musical instrument, pottery, arms and armor,   adds value to the museum. The museum also has after independence galleries with Pakistani currency and the pictures of the heroes who participated in the freedom war. The museum contains example of arts and crafts of the province of Punjab. One can have a detailed study of the culture of the area if he visits the museum. If you visit Lahore you must not lost the opportunity to visit the museum.
