Lying 30 miles southwest of Chakwal on the Chakwal-Sargodha road, Kallar Kahar is known for its peacocks, for its freshwater lake, and for the Takht-e-Babri, a flat stage built of stone by emperor Babar to address his army while coming down from Kabul in the quest of the crown of Delhi. A large single stone, elevated, carved out sitting place is also present in the garden, known as “ Takht-e-Babri” throne of Babur .
During his stay at Kallar Kahar, Babar was so much impressed by the beauty of the place that he ordered to plant a garden, which still exists, called the Bagh-e-Safa. In his memoirs, Tazuk e babri, Babar described Kallar Kahar as a "charming place with good air and never to be forgotten" and natural beauty.
Kallar Kahar lake is situated in a beautiful valley in the southern mountainous area of Potohar plateau in the salt range. It is located at an altitude of about 1500 ft from sea level.
There is a natural lake which is fed by a natural fresh water spring at the base of hills. The lake is not deep, so a lot of natural vegetation can be seen all around it and even in the middle. It is a natural breeding sanctuary for many birds, so it is an ideal place to stop and watch the birds.
Wild peacocks can be seen wandering around the area. Now and then their particular sound can be heard clearly but you can’t see these peacocks in the day time. If you want to see dancing Peacocks then you will have to get up early in the morning and have to go to the famous shrine of Sakhy Ahoo Bahoo (Syed Pir Muhammed Ishaq & Pir Muhammed Yaqoob) in Kallar Kahar, there you can watch dozens of Peacocks coming at shrine showing their gratitude and leaving before the visitors come. Due to rush of visitors the peacocks come to shrine early morning and go back to jungle for the day time. Shrine is on the top of hills, from shrine you can watch the whole Kallar kahar. Lake is in front of this mountain. so you must go there n check the beauty of the valley.
The excavation at Kallar kahar has unearthed thousands years old fossils from the site.The Archaeology department of Punjab is setting a museum there at the sight. The museum will high light the culture and history of the site.
At Kallar Kahar, TDCP has developed a beautiful resort, overlooking the lake, fully furnished with air-conditioned accommodation , a restaurant and a snack bar. Here the boating amidst, singing birds and natural beauty enhance the tourists. A tourist information centre of TDCP is working here to provide information.
